Late Rains in the Valley

Kanyemba has been open for 6 weeks of the 2024 season already and we would usually have said goodbye to the rainy season by now. But this has not been an ordinary year by any means. February, which is typically the month with the most rainfall, hardly gave us more than a few millimetres of rain.

March, which typically is the month that sees the transition from rainy season to dry season, has instead given us no rain at all, and instead has been unusally hot!

Sadly this weather has made made headlines in the Zambian news regularly, as it has resulted in very poor yields for commercial, small scale and subsistence farmers.

The Zambezi river has also seen a massive decrease in levels and flow, as most of its waters are regulated by the big man-made lake Kariba, about 85 kms upstream from Kanyemba Lodge , and by its hydro-electric generation.

The last couple of days have however, delivered about 50 mm of rain, and with it some relief for the vegetation and animals in the valley, as well much appreciated cooler temperatures!

As always, the storms bring with them spectacular sunsets and views!
