Ever since
its inception Kanyemba has tirelessly worked with the local community,
the wildlife authority and the other stakeholders in the Lower Zambezi,
to conserve the natural resources of flora and fauna in the area and in
the Zambezi. This was done both by assisting the authorities and Conservation
Lower Zambezi in law enforcement operations and by providing an alternative
option to poaching with the provision of jobs.
During the building process Kanyemba employed over 65 unskilled workers.
With a huge expence most of these were trained and now represent the bulk
of the 42-strong workforce that Kanyemba Lodge and its carpentry now employ.
The result is now a successful story of an ever-increasing number of wildlife
in the stretch of river surrounding the lodge, and the huge improvement
of the skills of its employees.
Kanyemba also spearheaded the catch and release policy for tigerfish and
vundu, and has assisted Zambian fisheries to stop illigal fishing in the
area. Angling opportunities now represent an exquisite adventure for our
guests at zero impact to the fish population in the Zambezi River.
Kanyemba is also a corporate member of Conservation Lower Zambezi (CLZ),
and has been instrumental in setting up the Environmental Education Project
at CLZ Base camp. This project provides the opportunity to young Zambian
children from the poorest and remotest areas of Zambia an opportunity
to learn, appreciate and love the wildlife and the natural resources of
the Lower Zambezi.
All guests staying at Kanyemba are required to pay a 2 US$ pppn bed levy
towards the sustainability of this Project (this is already included in
your daily rate at Kanyemba).
In 2004 Kanyemba and its guests has been one of the biggest private donor
to CLZ and its Environmental Education Project.
